Comparison/Contrast Essay by Ayu Ratna Pratiwi

Apples and Oranges

Apples and oranges are both round fruit that grow on trees.  They are both taste good and have vitamins and nutrients that are good for you.  Eating both on a regular basis can help to keep you healthy.  They both can be made into juice.  Oranges are orange in color.  Which came first the color or the fruit?  Apples can be red, green, yellow or any combination of those colors.  The skin or rind of the orange is edible and a source of vitamin C but most people do not eat it.  The skin of an apples, unless it is used in baking, is usually eaten.

The rind of an orange can be easily removed with just your fingers.  To remove the skin of an apple you need a knife or peeler.  Oranges can have seeds or be seedless.  All apples have seeds.  Once the rind is removed from an orange, it can easily be separated into sections.  An apple would have to be sliced with a knife into sections.

Oranges can be made into marmalade.  Apples can be made into jelly.  Oranges are not used in baking.  Apples are made into pies.  Except for the rind and seeds, all of an orange is usually eaten.  Usually the core of the apples where the seeds are is not eaten.  There are even special tools designed to remove the cores from apples.

Apples usually come with stems, oranges do not.  The flesh of an orange is soft and juicy.  An apple is usually crisp and crunchy.  The orange tree is a flowering evergreen.  The apple tree is a flowering deciduous in the rose family.   Oranges are citrus fruit.

In conclusion, while there are some things in common between apples and oranges there are many differences as well.
